Over the years, the HTGA has been honored to have many wonderful members. The organization was founded on the principles of fellowship, friendship and competition. But in life, we sometimes lose a good friend. And this page is a tribute to those we can no longer welcome in person to our events. However, they are never truly gone, because the memories shared with friends on the golf course live on...



GEORGE MARCUS "MARK" HAWKINS, 75, of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13 2026. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri December 10, 1950 and graduated from Roosevelt High School in May 1969. After one semester of college, he was drafted into the Army where he served 2 years. After he was honorably discharged, he came home and married his childhood sweetheart, Desiree Grich. After the tragic loss of his first wife, Mark met and fell in love again to the second love of his life, Janice Harvey. He devoted his life to AT&T for 44 ½ years, when he retired in 2015, to live his best life. His employment with AT&T brought new opportunities when he moved his young family to Houston in 1975 where he resided until his passing. He was a graduate of University of Houston with a degree in Electrical Engineering which helped him in his career. He loved all sports including his passion, Golf, where he hit 3 holes in ones. He was a member of the Houston Telephone Golf Association (HTGA) as well as the American Legion. He was an avid history buff who enjoyed American History the most. Once retired, he enjoyed taking beach vacations with his Wife, Brother and Sister-in-Law and his annual September golf vacation with his Brother-in-Law and nephews and the annual HTGA golf tournament. He is survived by his wife, Janice Hawkins, his daughters Jeannine Boyd (Stephen), Barbe Rodriguez (David), his grandchildren, Arabella Rodriguez, Jesse Espinosa, Liberty Hinkle (Joseph), Kelly Windham (Jimmy), and 7 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents George and Velma Hawkins, the mother of his children, Dynette Espinosa, his brother, Harry "Douglass" Hawkins.



CHARLES NOLAN "CHARLIE" COFFELL, 68, resident of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, passed away 1 Oct 2018 at the Little Rock VA Hospital. He was born 21 Nov 1949 in St. Louis, MO. Charlie retired from AT&T in San Antonio after many years working for them in St. Louis, Houston and San Antonio. Charlie and his wife, Norma, retired to Hot Spring Village in 2007.



STEPHEN RAY "STEVE" HOWARD, 60, resident of Dickinson, Texas for 34 years, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016. He was born August 8, 1955, in Snyder, Texas to parents, Lawrence Edward and Kattie Lucille Howard. He retired after 39 years with AT&T. Steve enjoyed spending time with his family and dogs, loved playing golf and watching sports, especially UH Cougar athletics. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Charles Ronald French, Troy Dale French, Jerry Lawrence Howard and Andrew Davis Howard. Steve is survived by his wife, Judy Howard, his daughter, Rachel Howard, his son, Daniel Howard, one sister, Diane White and husband Larry, two brothers, Roger Mark Howard and Donald Max Howard, as well as nieces, nephews, and their families. In his honor there will be a memorial service held at Crowder Funeral Home Chapel, Dickinson, Texas on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

GERALD FRANK "JERRY" SPITZENBERGER, after a nine year struggle, lost his life to cancer at the age of 53 on Saturday, March 24, 2007. He is survived by a family who loves him very much, including: his wife, Donna Jean Spitzenberger; his parents, Frank and Mary Gene Spitzenberger; his two children, Matthew and Elizabeth Spitzenberger; his son-in-law, Robert Rightmire III; his four grandchildren, Robby, Cassidy, Cody and Savanna; his two brothers, Rick Spitzenberger and Steve Spitzenberger and wife Denise; his father and mother-in-law, Gilbert and Carol Martinez; his brother and sisters-in-law, Jeffrey and Suzanne LaMotte, and Trish Martinez; his nieces and nephews, Gregory, Leah, Jerry Wayne, Amber, Carlos, David, Zachary and Sarah; his aunts and uncles, Rosalie and Morel Grant, Paul and Wanda Spitzenberger, Frank and Jean Dulaney, Bill Nabors; and many cousins. He is also survived by those who gave their love, friendship and prayers: his many, many friends from his 31 years with "the phone company", his golfing buddies, his poker group, his fantasy football league at Katy Elks, his hunting buddies, his college roommates, and so many others. Memorial services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2007 in the chapel of Waltrip Funeral Directors.
